COUNCILLORS have paid tribute to a compassionate and campaigning colleague who died last night (Tuesday) after battling cancer.

Norwegian-born Solveig Stone, 72, lived in Ruislip and served the West Ruislip ward for 10 years after being elected as a councillor in Hillingdon in 1998.

Leader of the Council, Ray Puddifoot, said: "On behalf of the administration and all council staff, I would like to express my condolences to Solveig's family and friends.

"Solveig served Hillingdon Council and the residents of the borough with dedication and distinction over many years.

"She was a real character and truly a people's champion with the ability to mix both passion and compassion when representing the views of residents. We will miss her very much."

Mayor of Hillingdon, Brian Crowe, said: "I have known Solveig Stone both as a councillor and before. She has also been my colleague as a ward councillor and in that time she has constantly had great integrity.

"As a cabinet member I know that she was dedicated to ensuring improvements in education and as a ward councillor she always worked hard for the benefit of the whole community.

"Solveig seconded my nomination for Mayor which is a point for which I owe personal thanks.

"I am deeply saddened at todayÕs news and offer my condolences to her family."

Mike Cox, leader of the Liberal Democrats, said: "Solveig Stone always did her best for the residents she served and her party.

"In the last few years as a backbencher she displayed a streak of independence and courage which I greatly admired.

"She will be sadly missed and my condolences go to her husband and family."

A THERAPY day held by a Ruislip Buddhist group was a huge success raising £2,000 to help preserve ancient Buddhist teachings.

Lelung Dharma Centre held their 10th Therapy Day fundraiser at Ruislip Young People's Centre in Bury Street, Ruislip, on July 12 to support the Lelung Dharma Trust, and the work of the group's spiritual director H. E. Lelung Tulku Rinpoche in preserving precious Buddhist teachings.

Ruislip-Northwood MP Nick Hurd and West Ruislip councillor Phillip Corthorne came to support the group on the day, along with more than 200 other people.

The charity's work is not only to preserve ancient Buddhist teachings but also to make Buddhism and meditation accessible to people.

The centre has been holding their bi-annual events and weekly teaching and meditation for the past five years, but now want to take it a step further and open their own drop-in centre in Ruislip.

Event coordinator, Connie Dusek, said: "The turn out at the event shows the growing local interest in our projects, and having our own centre would mean that people could come and find out about Buddhism and meditation on their own terms.

"People are slowly becoming more conscious of the Tibetan people, and their rich culture. We hope this will encourage people to find out more about our projects and how they can help to make a difference."

COUNCILLOR Solveig Stone died last night after a battle with cancer.

The Conservative councillor who represented the West Ruislip ward was a strong campaigner in the area, most recently against the development of flats in the Kingsend and Sharps Lane area of Ruislip.

A full tribute will follow shortly.
