A MUM who was touched by the story of a little girl with a brain tumour raised £1,500 to help pay for her to go to Lapland.

Kerry O'Malley, 28, of Filey Way, Ruislip Manor, organised a disco at The White Bear, in Ickenham Road, Ruislip, to help raise the money.

Gary Stocker and brothers Ryan Bradbury, 24, and Elliott O'Connor, 26, from Ruislip, also helped to organise the event because their brother died of a brain tumour in 2002 when he was just seven.

Ms O'Malley said: "I saw Liberty on Facebook and I read her story and it just really touched me. I really admire how her parents have dealt with the situation and it inspired me to want to do something for the charity."

Two-year-old Liberty Rose Finn has a twin sister and lives with her parents Carl, 34, and Dawn, 32, in Derbyshire. Yesterday (Thur) the family travelled down to Ruislip to spend the day with Ms O'Malley.

At just eight months old Liberty was diagnosed with a brain tumour. It was too deep for surgery so she instead had to go through 18 months of chemotherapy to make it smaller.

Mr Finn said: "We started a support group for Liberty in January this year and the support went through the roof.

"We asked friends to start spreading invites to people to join the group and Kerry was one of the people who received one.

"We had so much support that we decided to start a charity and the event Kerry organised has been one of the first.

"The money she raised will pay for Liberty to go to Lapland because she has been turned down by When You Wish Upon A Star charity because she has more benign cells than malignant.

"We could lose Liberty at any time though. The doctors say it's not life threatening but it could rupture at any time. We could wake up one morning and she could have had a stroke.

"Our aims with the charity are to support children's brain tumour research and raise awareness on an international level."

Ms O'Malley will be holding another event in October to continue to raise money for the charity.

YOUTHS who complain of boredom will finally be given a break from the streets after plans were announced to build a young people's centre in South Ruislip.

The new youth centre will be built on the site formally used by Hillingdon School of Gymnastics, in Victoria Road.

Hillingdon Council have also outlined plans to build 35 flats, a new library and an adult education facility on the site of the current library, which is next to the gym.

The plans were first announced by the Leader of the Council, Councillor Ray Puddifoot, at the South Ruislip Residents' Association meeting on July 22.

He said: "These developments are about providing something for the whole community.

"We're building on the success that we've had with our new libraries in other areas of the borough and combining this with providing the opportunity for residents to get on the property ladder, as we did in Ruislip Manor.

"Providing a new youth centre will also give all young people in Hillingdon the chance to take part in a range of activities and really maximise this site as a community resource."

The new library will be larger and include a Starbucks café, improved opening hours and book stock.

A purpose built adult education facility will also be included in the development as well as new one-bedroom and two-bedroom flats above both the library and in between the library and the youth centre.

South Ruislip councillor, Allan Kauffman, said: "The plans are currently being drawn up and they need to go through planning but the development will be finished by April 2011.

"We originally had plans to build the new library in the car park next to Sainsbury's in Long Drive and the youth centre in Acol Crescent but we had major concerns from residents.

"When Swallows came up we decided to use that site and when we told the residents' association we had overwhelming approval for it, which was smashing.

"The youth centre will have all sorts of things in it, like cooking, a recording studio and a sports hall.

"The library is in a dilapidated state and it looks awful. The new one will be a replica of the library in Ruislip Manor.

"We do really care about what happens in South Ruislip and I just think it will be a big boost for the area."

SIX fire engines and around 30 firefighters tackled a blaze at a soccer centre in Ruislip.

Firefighters from Northolt, Wembley, Harrow, Ruislip, Fulham and Stanmore stations attended the fire at Goals Soccer Centre, in Victoria Road, South Ruislip, at 3.20am on Sunday (26).

The fire was under control by 5.40am and about 10 per cent of the single storey detached building's exterior was damaged, most of which was wooden cladding.

Dominic Knight, regional manager of Goals, said: "There was no one there at the time so you have got to thank your lucky stars for that.

"We are still trading as normal because it was basically superficial damage to the outside of the building and it's easy to repair.

"Luckily enough the firefighters got down in time and they did a sterling job.

"We think it was started by a cigarette in a waste paper bin because we had a function on that night."

However, the cause of the blaze is still under investigation.
