Plans to open a gym in the Manor are refused

Posted by Charlene Mitchell on Nov 2, 09 04:44 PM in

PLANS to open a gym have been refused after a petition signed by 190 members, residents and friends of another gym was submitted.

The application to change 76 and 78 Victoria Road, Ruislip Manor, from shops to a gym was refused at the north planning committee last Tuesday (27).

The petition was submitted to oppose the plans in fear that if a new gym was to open, then Optimum Gum, in Manor Way, could end up closing and it would also lead to on street parking.

The application was refused on the grounds that the gym would harm the vitality and attractiveness of the town centre by eroding the retail character and function of the shopping centre and would result in an over concentration of non-shop uses within that part of the town centre.

We'd like to hear from you.

Cannot believe the application for a gym in Victroria Road was turned down. Competition is good. If the gym in Manor Way is any good it will keep it clients. There is more than ample parking the public carparks. Need to bring 'bodies' to the High Sreet' not keep moving them up the hill past the traffic lights. A big mistake by the planning committee.

I'm really glad the application has been turned down. Optimum Gym is an excellent Gym and quite capable of meeting the needs of all those in the vicinity and as it is up the hill it keeps the congestion away from the shops. Not many times I have faith in knowing the planners know what they are doing!!

I agree with Ailsa. Also, this article does not outline the awful franchise operation that was trying to set up in the Manor. They are well publicised on the web to set up gyms and then close all of a sudden still charging the people they tied in to contracts. Well done to the council for making the right decision!

I am delighted that the council has listened to the people! The erosion of retail shops changes the whole atmosphere of a shopping street. In Hanwell the opening of a large gym created a dead corner which then resulted in other shops closing down. It also meant it was impossible to pop into the shops as gym owners spend on average 2 hours in the premises. Good decision!
