A RETIRED children's charity worker celebrated her 100th birthday at a Ruislip care home on Sunday (17).

Great aunt Elsie Newbury was born in Isleworth, west London, and spent most of her working life as a carer at a Dr Barnado's children's home in Eastbourne.

Mrs Newbury, who has outlived her three siblings, has been a member of Salem Baptist Church in Uxbridge Road, Uxbridge for several years. She was once captain of the girls brigade at the church and taught in the Sunday school, as well as singing in the choir.

Her hobbies have included gardening, embroidery and travel - as a pensioner, she journeyed to India with a friend and rode an elephant.

To mark her milestone, Mrs Newbury received a telegram from the Queen and enjoyed a birthday party at Blenheim Care Home, in Ickenham Road, where she has been living since October 2007.

Guests included the Mayor of Hillingdon, Councillor Shirley Harper-O'Neill, and Mrs Newbury's nephew, David Stubbles, along with his wife, Anita, and twin sons Richard and Philip, both nine.

Mr Stubbles said: "I think my aunt is amazing - she has always loved children and I think working with them has helped keep her mind young. No one in our family has ever reached that age and that's very exciting for all of us."

We'd like to hear from you.
